Eight Shetland College Contemporary Textiles students transformed a room of the Shetland Textile museum at the Bod of Gremista as part of Shetland Wool Week 2011

An Apprentice style challenge was set for a group of eight Shetland College Contemporary Textiles students to transform a room of the Shetland Textile museum at the Bod of Gremista … creating an art installation with no budget the project has tested their skills, bright ideas and resourcefulness to create samples and source re-cycled materials to make a display which links to the museum’s history.

Sarah Laurenson of Jamieson and Smith took the place of Sir Alan Sugar at the initial presentation when the students pitched ideas which included use of Shetland dialect and inspiration from tradition and popular culture.

Demonstration of the ability to work together as a team is an essential part of the Professional Practice modules which form part of the degree program.

Sarah commended the student’s creativity to find a range of fresh solutions in a very short time and their allocation of roles within the groups which played to their individual strengths.

The students considered all potential visitors to the museum, particularly the need to excite young minds and the journey to the final result can be seen on their blog:

The project has been developed whilst the students are completing weave and Visual Studies modules and Jennie Atkinson the textile museum co –coordinator was delighted by their energy and commitment said “it is amazing that the students could put this together so quickly.”

The final installation which evolved from their ideas was on display to the public as part of Shetland Wool Week at the Shetland textile Museum, Bod of Gremista.
