Here is an outline of the curriculum for the year, broken down month by month.

August

• To learn new and familiar songs and rhymes
• To develop their gross and fine motor skills
• To follow rules and safety regulations within the setting

September

Learning Outcomes:

• To continue to develop children’s self-esteem and sense of security
• To learn to express their feelings, choices, and preferences
• To learn to use technologies
• To experiment with colours/shapes in their art craft activities
• To be able to communicate with adults and other children
• To learn to work in groups
• To begin to recognise their names.
• To learn to count and recognise different shapes
• To explore different houses in from other places
• To find evidences that can help them find out the world around them    
  

October

• Halloween

Learning Outcomes:

• To learn basic counting
• To recognise numbers and shapes
• To listen and respond to stories and rhymes
• To make marks in a variety of media
• To explore different flags of the United Nations
• To use verbal and non verbal language during role play
• To corporate the mathematical processes in their play activities
• To use different shapes and colour in making flags
• To enjoy investigating different shapes and be creative with them
• To experiment in imaginative ways to represent the world around them
• To listen and try making music by clapping and using musical instruments

November

Events/Topics:

• Guy Fawkes
• Autumn
• Road Safety

Learning Outcomes:

• To respect and understand other people’s cultural and religious beliefs and festivals
• To feel safe when using fire works
• To understand the safety rules when crossing the road
• To be aware of road safety when out and about
• To use role play to invent situations
• To develop the awareness of the letters of the alphabet and numbers
• To recognise road signs and the importance of road safety
• To be aware of the changes of weather and how it affect our surroundings
• To be creative using different materials 

December

Events/Topics:

• Christmas

Learning Outcomes:

• To understand the real meaning of Christmas
• To encourage children to practice good manners like being kind to others
• To be actively involve in a variety of activities like singing and dancing
• To recognise the different purposes of the letters of the alphabet
• To recognise the initial sounds of the letters of the alphabet
• To gain control over their gross and fine motor skills
• To experiment with the variety of media by printing and painting when making Christmas decorations
• To learn to persevere task
• To be independent in caring for themselves

January

• Chinese New Year
• Up-Helly-Aa

Learning Outcomes:

• To become familiar of the belief of others
• To gain knowledge on other people’s culture and traditions
• To be aware of the importance of celebration, festivals and customs of other peoples’ religion
• To be aware the different types of evidence that help us learn our environment
• To gain confidence in using books to find interesting information
• To learn to plan and make choices and play cooperatively
• To be aware of our local celebration which is very important to the Shetland culture and history
• To learn a local Viking song
      

February

Learning Outcomes:

• To experience the wonder of the world around us
• To recognise the sun, moon, stars and link them to our daily pattern of life
• To be able to recognise simple type of forces and describe their effect
• To enjoy the patterns of sounds of words
• To learn to play socially
• To develop their listening skills
• To have confidence in using ICT in everyday situations
• To enjoy choosing stories and nursery rhymes
• To be able to use chart and help them to makes choices and decisions in their daily routine
      

March

• Mothering Week

Learning Outcomes:

• To learn and make connection with the past by exploring events and places of interest
• To learn to investigate different types of evidence that can help them find out the past
• To invent the situations using role play
• To explore how dinosaurs live in the past
• To develop their power of observation using their senses
• To encourage children to care for the environment
• To celebrate important dates for other people
• To be aware of the changes of weather and how it affect our plants and other living things     

April

• To enjoy selecting and choosing stories and text
• To enjoy exploring events and characters in stories and sharing their thoughts
• To explore interesting materials for writing
• To explore sounds, letters, and words and discovering how they put together
• To take part in conversations and discussions and discover new words and phrases
• To make musical instrument using different variety of media
• To participate the annual Shetland Folk Festival celebration
• To copy simple song and dances

• To explore and discover the interesting features of our local environment
• To experiment ways such as modelling and drawing to represent the world around them
• To discover the different roles of people play and how they can help us
• To enjoy energetic physical activity
• To have fun with others during our group activities
• To gain knowledge about different sports in the Olympic events
• To explore different sports and learn about them
