'Sculpture for Sandwick'
Students took part in a live project in partnership with Shetland Arts, local architect Alan McKay and Hjaltland Housing Association to design a sculpture for the housing association’s new scheme at Sandwick. Amy Geir was chosen after a presentation that wowed the judges. The project will now go ahead and be made into a public sculpture.
Architect Alan McKay said: “All the entries were excellent and each had their own merits. The winner caught our attention because she made good reference to the area – she had included Mousa Broch in her concept – and had thought about the community aspect in terms of seating. Her project also looked good on site and would be feasible in terms of cost and buildability."
'Shetland Students in Industry’s Design Bible'
Five BA graduates were invited to be part of the New Designers Exhibition 2010 – a high profile exhibition for the best new design graduates in the country. A team from the industry’s design bible, Textile Review, were on hand to choose a select few to feature in a forthcoming issue. Two Shetland students – Jennifer Tait and Angela Irvine – were chosen from 3,000 exhibitors; a great achievement that made the college very proud.
'Commended at Bradford Textile Exhibition'
Another two Second Year students, Monica Pothecary and Wendy Shaw, were both commended at the Bradford Textile Exhibition. This is a great accolade for two reasons: the other students in the competition were all Honours students; and it was the first year that Shetland students had been recognised.
'Student Wins Prize for Best New Exhibitor'
The National Certificate Art and Design course had to be redesigned this year in keeping with national trends. It now incorporates more digital art and photography (hence the introduction of the new Mac suite). Student Amy Irvine exhibited at the Bonhoga Gallery Open and won the prize for best new exhibitor.
'Scotland Colleges' Enterprising Student of the Year Award Success'
One learner on the BA Contemporary Textiles programme won the regional heat of Scotland Colleges Enterprising Student of the Year Award and went forward to the national final at the Falkirk Wheel in September 2010.
