English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)

COURSE INFORMATION:

Place of Study: Shetland College UHI, Lerwick and Islesburgh Community Centre, Lerwick

Mode of Study: Part-time, day and evening classes.

Length of course: 1 year

Start Date: September 2011

Entry Requirements: None. All applicants for ESOL courses are individually assessed by a tutor to place them on a course which is right for them.

COURSE SUMMARY:

The ESOL programme is for people who do not speak English as their first language and who would like to get better at reading, writing, listening and speaking English.

COURSE CONTENT:

A range of ESOL courses is available. You can join a class working towards a qualification at Access 2, Access 3, Intermediate 1 or Intermediate 2. If you complete one of these courses, you can apply for UK citizenship. Classes are available both in the day time and in the evening. We also run ‘Culture Club’ sessions once a term where you can learn about Shetland’s music, history, dialect and traditions.

HOW WILL I STUDY?

You will attend a class once a week. There will be work to do at home.

Academic: NC programmes, after completing ESOL Intermediate 1

Employment/Career: This course opens up a range of opportunities to take more college courses or help you find a better job
