Access to Apply for Social Work
COURSE INFORMATION:
Place of Study: Shetland College UHI, Lerwick and work placement
Mode of Study: Full time
Length of course: 1 year (9.15am – 3.00pm) plus 6 hours study a week
Start Date: August 2011
Entry Requirements: Standard Grade English at Credit level and Mathematics at General level plus the required level of maturity to work in a care environment. Adult returners will be considered without these qualifications. Successful applicants must provide a reference and complete an Enhanced Disclosure check before commencing this course.
COURSE SUMMARY:
This course is for people who have decided on a career in social work. Robert Gordon University have given positive feedback on Shetland College UHI students who have progressed on to study with them. They commented that this Access course prepares students well for their Degree in Social Work and successful completion of the course will guarantee students an interview on the Social Work Degree course with them.
COURSE CONTENT:
This course incorporates 3 Highers: Care, Early Years and Psychology/Sociology.
The following subjects are covered:
- Values and Principles in Care
- Sociology for Care
- Psychology for Care
- The Individual in the Social Context
- Investigating Behaviour
- HIV and Related Illnesses
- Child Development and Behaviour
- Holistic Approaches to Childcare
- Child Protection and Counselling Skills
- Supporting Children with Additional Support
HOW WILL I STUDY?
Teaching of these units will involve short lectures, group discussions, individual exercises and personal study.
