COURSE INFORMATION:

Place of Study: Shetland College UHI, Lerwick and selected Learning Centres through supported distance learning. This is a UHI networked course, which can be studied anywhere with access to a computer.  Contact your local Learning Centre for more information.

Full-time: 1 year (HNC), 2 years (HND), 3 years (BA), 4 years (BA Hons)

Part time: 2 years (HNC), 4 years (HND), 6 years (BA), 8 years (BA Hons)

COURSE SUMMARY:

This degree celebrates the diversity of childhood experience across the Highlands and Islands, from urban areas to remote island communities. It prepares students for a career in child and youth work giving them the skills they need. If you are already working with children it will give you a rigorous academic qualification to strengthen your practical experience.

The course takes a holistic approach to the subject, bringing together a wide range of disciplines to examine influences upon the young from early years to adolescence. Although subjects central to the experience of the Highlands and Islands are highlighted throughout the course (particularly issues of rurality and isolation), you will also develop a broad understanding of child and youth issues across Britain and Europe.

COURSE CONTENT:

Level 1 units: Introduction to Child Development; Introduction to the Early Years' Curriculum; Continuum of Development; Health and Life Chances; Specialist Provision; Developing Personal Effectiveness; Family Studies; and Provision for Children

Level 2 units: Child Development: Theoretical Perspectives; Play and Early Childhood; The Impact of Early Childhood Experiences on Adolescence; Learning from Research and Innovation; Working in Partnership; Recognising and Challenging Discrimination and Disadvantage; Legislation and Childhood; Contemporary Issues; The Urban Rural Conflict; and Specialist Provision

Level 3 units: Language Acquisition; Cognitive Development in the Nursery; Promoting and Enhancing Parenting; Drug and Alcohol Studies; Issues of Work and Leisure for Young People; Effective Management and Leadership; Organisational Development; Ethical Issues; Comparative Issues in Childcare; Issues of Risk; and Enquiry Skills

Supported distance learning is offered to all students using online modules and on-site inductions. Special arrangements may be made to support more remote students.

Academic: Further training in health, social care and related fields e.g. vocational postgraduate courses in teacher training and social work

Employment/Career: Graduates will have a broad-based academic qualification that will enable them to pursue further training in health, education, social care and a range of related work

Former students have: Gone on to do a one-year postgraduate course in Primary Teaching.
