Psychology HigherCOURSE INFORMATION:

Place of Study: Shetland College UHI, Lerwick

Mode of Study: Part time

Length of course: 1 year (Evening class, Tuesdays 6.00pm – 9.00pm)

Start Date: September 2011

Entry Requirements: Standard Grade English is desirable, adult returners will be considered without this qualification.

COURSE SUMMARY:

Students will gain an understanding of topics such as: early socialisation; the effects of early attachments; theories behind stress; approaches used to help explain atypical/abnormal behaviour; and research studies which help to explain reasons for conformity and obedience. Students will also gain practical experience of conducting research with methods used by psychologists when testing hypothesis and developing theories.

COURSE CONTENT:

Understanding the Individual – Examines the theory, concepts and research relevant to the biological nature, stress and the development of early socialisation.

Investigating Behaviour – Examines the research methods, statistical analysis and skills used to study research in psychology. Provides the experience of taking part in a practical research project.

The Individual in Society – Explores research, concepts and theory of: Social Psychology (exploring the topic conformity and obedience); and Psychology of Individual Difference (studying the topic atypical/abnormal behaviour).

With short Internet-supported lectures, group discussions, individual exercises and personal study.
