Entry Requirements: 3 Highers at C or equivalent – 1 in English. Alternative qualifications, awards or appropriate access programmes also considered. Applications from individuals without these qualifications but who demonstrate ability are welcomed.
COURSE SUMMARY:
This innovative literature degree studies Scottish literature in a global context enabling you to appreciate the importance of Scotland’s significant literary output and its international scope. The degree will give you a critical awareness and understanding of recent developments within the study of literature, and the ways in which literature produces cultural change and difference. You can study this course online with all lectures and learning materials available on UHI’s VLE. You will get support from your tutors and studies adviser online, via email and telephone. You will also participate in online discussions and seminars with your classmates and tutors.
COURSE CONTENT:
Year One: Provides a solid foundation in key literary genres, focusing on the exciting and famous period in Scottish literature – the Scottish Renaissance, in its international literary context.
Year Two: Expands your knowledge of Scottish literature by studying themes in key literary periods in more depth.
Years Three and Four: Enables you to engage in more specialised study in Scottish literature through modules; eg. Post Colonial Literature, Romanticism in Urban Scottish Fiction, Biography and Autobiography.
In Year Three there is a research project, in Year Four a dissertation.
HOW WILL I STUDY?
This is a UHI networked course which means it is taught by video-conferencing (VC), virtual learning environment (VLE), CD ROMs, the Internet, Email and conventional distance learning packs. This can be accessed from Shetland College UHI main campus in Lerwick and selected Learning Centres. The network delivery on this course is by experts from each field based in UHI partner colleges including Shetland College UHI. Full-time students will normally study 4 modules per semester. Each module will be supported by a 90 minute video conference class and online course materials on the Blackboard virtual learning environment. Class and self directed study together should take about 10 hours per week, per module.
PROGRESSION:
Academic: From completion of the Honours Degree it is possible to progress to the UHI MLitt Highlands and Islands Literature programme, or to related MLitt such as Orkney and Shetland Studies.
Employment/Career: Literature graduates traditionally go on to a wide range of careers as their transferable skills in presentation prepare them for many different workplace challenges. The course is particularly suited as a foundation to a teaching career.
