Access to Nursing
COURSE INFORMATION:
Place of Study: Shetland College UHI, Lerwick and work experience with NHS Shetland
Mode of Study: Full time
Length of course: 1 year (9.15am – 3.00pm) plus 6 hours study a week
Start Date: August 2011
Entry Requirements: Standard Grade English at Credit level and Maths at General level. Adult returners will be considered without these qualifications. Successful applicants must provide a reference and complete an Enhanced Disclosure before commencing this course.
COURSE SUMMARY:
This course is for people who have decided on a career in nursing. Applicants are interviewed jointly by Shetland College UHI lecturers and Robert Gordon University (RGU) lecturers as there are progression routes available onto the Diploma in Nursing at RGU.

- Values and Principles in Care
- Sociology for Care
- Psychology for Care
- Human Body Function for Care Support Workers: An Introduction
- Safety in a Care Environment
- Prevention of Infection
- Counselling Skills
- First Aid
- HIV, Hepatitis B & Hepatitis C Infections.
- Core Skills: Communication, Numeracy, IT, Problem Solving and Working with Others

Academic: Diploma / Degree in Nursing. Successful completion of this course guarantees a place to study the Diploma/Degree in Nursing at Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen, subject to occupational health screening.
