Early Education and Childcare Higher

COURSE INFORMATION:

Place of Study: Shetland College UHI, Lerwick

Mode of Study: Part time

Length of course: 1 year (1 day per week, 9:15 am – 3:00pm) plus 2 hours study

Start Date: September 2011

Entry Requirements: No formal entry requirements.  An induction day will be held to assess if individuals are able to work at the required level.

COURSE SUMMARY:

This Higher can be completed through attendance at Shetland College UHI one day per week and consists of 3 units: Child Development: Birth to 12 years; Developmental Theory in Early Education and Childcare; and Holistic Approaches to Child Health: 0 – 12 years.

COURSE CONTENT:

Child Development: Birth to 12 years – This unit investigates: aspects of child development including physical, emotional, social, cognitive and linguistic development; theories of growth, development and behaviour; and influences on growth, development and behaviour.

Developmental Theory in Early Education and Childcare – This unit covers: The theory supporting emotional, personal and social development of children; and evaluating developmental theory in relation to development of children age 0 – 12.

Holistic Approaches to Child Health: 0 – 12 years – This unit covers: The basic health needs of children; the contribution agencies, professionals and carers make in maintaining and promoting child health; and the factors which affect the health of children.

HOW WILL I STUDY?

With group discussions, personal study and individual tutor support. This Higher comprises of 3 units which are achieved through internal assessments plus an external exam.
