HeritageThe Heritage section specialises in supporting students on networked degree level programmes: Heritage courses
The Highlands and Islands in general, and Shetland in particular, have a wealth of cultural and natural heritage to draw upon for courses offered by the Heritage section at Shetland College UHI. Shetland has unparalleled monumental remains, from Neolithic farmsteads and tombs to modern forts and field defences. The islands are home to important colonies of birds and marine mammals set within some of the most dramatic seascapes in Britain. Modern industries, such as fishing, wind farms and oil, present fascinating management challenges in balancing conservation against economic development. In addition Shetland’s own unique dialect and wealth of spoken, written, musical and craft heritage are a rich resource for students within this section. All the courses offered encourage students to access these resources particularly in the later years of the programmes, for original research and industrial placements. While the courses’ content is firmly focused on local examples they also tackle principles of universal significance and will impart widely applicable, transferable skills to students.
