Shetland College UHI

Location

The Library and Information Centre is located off the common area on the ground floor of the main building and is fully accessible for disabled users.

Collection

The library collection contains over 4,600 books, 40 periodicals (print) and access to several thousand online journals. The stock also includes CDs, DVDs and Videos. In addition, most items throughout the UHI partnership libraries can be borrowed through an inter-site loan scheme, which is free of charge.

lib3.jpgComputers

There are 15 computers for student use. Most of these are terminals for the UHI's computer platform, Citrix, and all offer access to the internet, the Library Catalogue, E-Book Collections and E-Resources, the UHI E-Mail system and  Virtual Learning Environment.

The Library computers are intended for college work and study only, particularly at busy times.

Study Facilities

In addition to the computer spaces, there are a further 14 study spaces available. The library offers a quiet study space and users are asked to respect this. Those who need to work in discussion groups should move to the common area immediately outside the library.

Printing

The library computers are linked to a combined printer/photocopier. All students are given a printing allowance of 1000 credits at the beginning of the academic year. This should be enough for your college requirements, equating to 250 sheets of black and white A4 printing. If you need further credits, these can be purchased and added to your account. Full details of costs for different types of printing, and for how to top up your credit, can be found here.

Photocopying

The library houses a photocopier which is available for student use. Any copies made are deducted from your annual print allowance, and must be arranged through a member of the library staff. For this reason, copying is only available when library staff are on duty. If you are making a special trip into college to use the copier, it is advisable to call in advance and check that staff will be available. The number to call is 01595 771258.

You should also note that there are now strict legal copyright restrictions on most copying and the college expects all staff and students to abide by these when using college materials and equipment. The college has various licences, such as from the Copyright Licencing Agency and the Newspaper Licencing Agency, which allow copying within given limits. Details are posted beside the copier. Further guidance can be had from Library staff or from the Copyright Licencing Agency website.
