There's always something happening in Shetland with a long line up of festivals including world famous Up Helly AaShetland Folk Festival, Blues Festival, Guitar Festival, Fiddle Frenzy, summer carnival, rowing and sailing regattas, WordPlay and ScreenPlay festivals ...the list goes on and on.

This year, saw the Tall Ships Races back in Shetland in July.  The ships left Greenock on the Cruise in Company leg of the Races, leisurely calling in at a number of ports (including Fair Isle, Scalloway, Whalsay, Unst and Cullivoe) before they anchored in Lerwick.  There were many activities planned in these ports to celebrate this awesome spectacle - visit www.tallshipsraceslerwick.com and http://www.tallshipsraceslerwick.com/cruise-in-company to find out more.

As well as our great traditional fiddle music there are a variety of local rock bands, african drumming bands, guitarists and singers.  We also get visits from bands including Dave Pearce, Franz Ferdinand, Newton Falkner and Brit award-winning Mumford and Sons.

The Garrison Theatre is a great place to see the latest cinema releases, as well as attend concerts, plays and hear comedians.  A brand new cinema and music venue will also be opening in Shetland later this year.

Visit Bonhoga Gallery for an interesting art exhibition, trip to the gallery shop and enjoy a scone or cake in the cafe, located in scenic Kergord.

Take a trip to the award-winning Shetland Museum and Archives at Hay's Dock in Lerwick, as well as the many other local museums and visitor centres across Shetland.

There are plenty of opportunities to join Heritage groups or Environmental Groups and a long list of breathtaking archeological sites to explore. Visit Shetland Amenity Trust for more details.

Bookmark Shetland Arts website to find out more about a host of interesting festivals, exhibitions and talks.

You can also usually find live music at The Lounge on Wednesday and The Noost and Captain Flints at the weekend.  Posers nightclub is also open on Friday and Saturday.  All are based in Lerwick.
