Equality Impact Assessments

Find out more about how Shetland College UHI promotes equality of opportunity, positive attitudes and good relations among learners, staff and visitors

The College conducts equality impact assessments not only because we are legally required to do so, but also because we value a friendly and supportive atmosphere – where every learner is recognised and is treated as an individual.

The process supports us in promoting equality of opportunity, positive attitudes and good relations among learners, staff and visitors by taking a proactive approach to tackle unfair discrimination and improving the quality of the services.

What is an Equality Impact Assessment (EIA)?

Equality Impact Assessments are a crucial mechanism for identifying the potential effect of the College’s functions on its learners, staff and visitors. They encourage us to provide and deliver a quality service by helping us to take into account the needs of the college community. It is an excellent way to look at current, changed and new policies, procedures and practices in depth to see what impact they may have on different equality groups and whether the differential impact is negative or adverse.
