Maths Higher

What is special about this course?

This course provides a natural progression from National 5 Maths and includes three units and a final exam.

Good reasons to study this course:

  • Gain individual SQA unit awards or the Mathematics group award.
  • Ideal preparation for Mathematics at HN and degree levels.
  • Entry qualification for some higher education courses that have a numeracy or mathematics entry requirement.
  • Learn skills that can be very useful in work situations or in everyday life.

Entry requirements

Candidates would normally be expected to have attained one of the following (or equivalent): National 5 Maths or Intermediate 2 Maths.

OR have an equivalent level of knowledge.

The three course units cover:

  • Expressions and Functions

  • Relationships and Calculus

  • Applications

Each unit individually entitles the student to an SQA award. Achieve all three units and pass the final external exam to gain the Mathematics Higher Group Award.

How will I study my course?

  • Part Time
  • Evening

One evening per week – 3 hours.

Practical exercises at tutor-led classes plus study from a set book.

Students will be required to undertake self-study to complete the course.

8 Month

One evening per week (3 hours).

Funding

Students on part-time courses may be eligible to have their course fees waived or cover some of the cost of the course fees by using an Individual Training Account (ILA).

What can I do on completion of my course?

Academic: Higher Maths is one of the acceptable Higher level entry requirements for a wide range of HN and degree level courses.


Employment/Career: This course will provide proof of your developed maths skills to a prospective employer.


Former students have: Progressed on to study other courses at Shetland College UHI and other further and higher education institutions.
