Numeracy SCQF Level 4 and 5

What is special about this course?

The course is aimed at building basic numerical skills and is suitable for those who want to build up their confidence with using numbers. The course is suitable for mature students who wish to improve their numeracy or gain a formal qualification. It’s also suitable for younger students who would like to consolidate their number skills before progressing to mathematics.

Entry requirements

None

The course starts by identifying students’ strengths and weaknesses with their numbers and builds confidence in areas where students are less confident.


The main areas of study are :

  • Using Numbers
  • Reading Graphs and Charts
  • Drawing Graphs and Charts

The numeracy course does not cover topics on algebra, geometry and trigonometry.


Normally students will work through SCQF Level 4 level first and then progress on to SCQF Level 5.

How will I study my course?

  • Part Time

You will join a class at college or at your local learning centre and learn through lecturer input, group discussions and practical exercises. You will be expected to do some study at home each week.


How long will my course last?


1 Years

Part-time course available at Shetland College UHI and selected learning centres.

    What can I do on completion of my course?

    Academic: You could progress to further study on a range of National Certificate programmes and SVQs.


    Employment/Career: Numeracy at SCQF Level 5 is a required qualification for some jobs. The course meets one of the entry requirements for the Open University BSc (Honours) Adult Nursing course.


    Former students have: Been successful in getting employment and moving onto other college courses.
