National Certificate in Engineering Practice SCQF Level 5

What is special about this course?

The National Certificate in Engineering Practice at SCQF level 5 is a group of Units designed to provide candidates with a broad range of engineering practical skills, underpinned with relevant theory and knowledge.
This course is suitable for students who wish to develop relevant skills to allow them to seek employment in an engineering profession.

The course is particularly relevant to students who are seeking to be an engineering modern apprentice as it provides a route towards meeting the academic requirements of the modern apprenticeship scheme.

Entry requirements

Applicants may be invited to interview.
Core Skills at SCQF level 4
Mature students with some experience working in an engineering environment will be considered.
 

The course consists of a range of varied SQA engineering related units along with core skills units as follows:
Mathematics Craft 1
Engineering Using IT Technology
Health and Safety: Engineering
Engineering Materials
Engineering Dimensional Control
CAD for Engineering
Fabrication Skills
Fabrication Processes
Plant Maintenance Practice
Electrical Wiring Skills
Engineering Workshop Skills
Communication Core Skills 
In addition, these units can be supplemented with industry recognised EAL Level 2 units:
Producing Components Using Hand Fitting Techniques
Preparing and Using Lathes for Turning Operations
Preparing and Using Manual Metal Arc Welding Equipment

Preparing and Using Semi-Automatic MIG, MAG and Flux Cored Arc Welding Equipment

General Fabrication and Welding Applications
 

How will I study my course?

  • Full Time

Most of the units will be delivered face to face either in a workshop or classroom environment. There will be some course content delivered online.


How long will my course last?


1 Year

The course is full time, i.e. 5 days per week, with breaks at October, Christmas/New Year and Easter. The target completion time is mid May.


How will I be assessed?

    The course is assessed throughout the year with a variety of methods, including performance observation of practical tasks and end of unit written or oral assessments.
