International Volunteers Day - Chat with Student Sue Beer about her Voluntary Role at Citizens Advice Bureau
5th December 2020 is International Volunteers Day. Volunteering is a fantastic way to stay active and involved in the local community.
To celebrate International Volunteers Day we spoke to NC Art and Design student Sue Beer about her voluntary role at Shetland Islands Citizens Advice Bureau. Sue is a part time student who is now retired from work.
"My main volunteer role is on the Board of the Shetland Islands Citizens Advice Bureau. I've been there since 1998 following my placement there as an Information Management MSc student: I wrote my dissertation on the Rural Information Need of the Shetland Islands CAB.
As a management committee we are the employers and have responsibility for health and safety of the staff and clients and the financial security of the organisation. We have a role in the long term business planning but not in daily operational issues. We come from a wide range of backgrounds and advise the bureau and represent the people of Shetland.
I enjoy helping a valued organisation which provides such a well used service in Shetland, and the fellowship of the other members, staff and volunteers.
Volunteering is key for the bureau as our generalist advisers are all volunteers. Other volunteer roles are also available!"

Thanks to Sue Beer for sharing her volunteering story with us!
