Our collections, facilities and services.

Reading Materials and other resources

The materials we provide are primarily the texts identified by your tutors and lecturers as being relevant to your course. For higher education students, this will be the official reading list material. For further education, materials are chosen in close consultation with your tutors here at the college.

The library physically holds over 11000 print books and journals, along with CDs and DVDs. As a UHI student, you have further access to thousands of online books and journals, research databases, online maps and image collections.

In addition, our "inter site loan service" allows you to borrow most items held in the other UHI libraries.

Equipment and Technology

There are computers for student use. You can normally get one straight away and there is no need to book. All of our computers have internet access, including access to the UHI eResources and to student printing.

Wi-Fi is available throughout the college for students, staff and visitors. Please ask us for help if you have any difficulty getting internet access on your device.

Study Facilities

In addition to the computer stations available in the library, there are spaces to work if you have brought in your own laptop or other device, or just want to work old school with paper and pencil. We try to keep the library as a quiet study space and ask all users to respect others using the space. We have earphones you can use when watching videos online.

Small Group Room

The Small group room has three computers, one of which has a wall mounted screen - ideal for practicing presentations. This room can be booked, up to one week in advance,  by small groups of students who want to work together.  Please contact the library or speak to a member of library staff if you want to book the room.

Copying, Printing and Scanning

The Library computers are linked to a combined printer/copier or scanner. You will find that you have enough print credit to print the normal printing requirement for your course. In the interest of sustainability we ask that you use the print facilities sparingly and use them for college purposes only.

The photocopy and scanning functions are controlled by a password. Please speak to the library staff if you need to make copies, or scan material to your computer.

Can we help you?

  • Need help with finding the right materials for your assignment?
  • Does the phrase "Harvard Referencing" send shivers down your spine?
  • Need to know how to access electronic resources off campus or on?

The library staff are always delighted to help with these, and many other questions. If we don't know, we'll help you find out who does!
