New Year New Courses!

Shetland UHI have a wide range of courses, with many starting in early 2022. If you are considering a change of career, retraining, or even just brushing up on some skills, you will be able to find a course to suit your needs at Shetland UHI. Read on to get a flavour of some of the exciting courses you can join in 2022…

PDA Youthwork

This is a beginner’s course for full time or part time Youth Workers and volunteers. The course would suit candidates who may have little or no knowledge or experience of youth work, and also those working in the sector who may have considerable experience of youth work in a paid or volunteering capacity but who have no formal qualifications in youth work.

It is the first national introductory level Youth Work qualification in Scotland to be accredited and available to volunteers and paid staff and will form part of a framework of SQA qualifications for the sector.

NQ Health and Wellbeing Part Time

This is an NQ course at SCQF level 5.  This course would be useful for students who want to progress onto level 6 courses like Access to Nursing, NQ Childhood Practice, NC Social Sciences.  The course includes core skills like numeracy and ICT. This course will provide the knowledge needed for entry into careers in a variety of health, wellbeing and care related areas.

The course includes the following units:

  • Social Influences on development
  • Health sector in Scotland

Business and IT

We offer several courses in Admin, Business and IT. You can start from any level, and we offer these courses at our Learning Centres.

IT Skills

Will Santa bring you a new device for Christmas this year? You can learn how to use it, and how to get the best out of the applications on your new iPad or Android tablet through our Community Learning Courses.

We are now also offering the ICDL - the new name for the European Computer Driving Licence - which helps you become proficient at a number of digital skills and applications such as word processing,  spreadsheets and presentations. We can now offer this on a wider scale than ever before with more remote access to study this course in a way that suits you.

Numeracy and Literacy / Preparation for Study

Are you thinking about undertaking a new course later in 2022, but want to study for entry level qualifications to prepare yourself? Do you need to achieve Numeracy Level 5 or Communication Level 5 to undertake the next step on your learning journey?

SAGE Accounting

This one-week course will give you, and your employees, the necessary skills to use SAGE accounting software.

This Unit is designed to enable candidates to use a commercial accounting software package to process financial transactions and to prepare accounting reports.  This is a credited SQA course. 

The course is scheduled to run Monday 24th January - Friday 28th January 09:30-4:30pm daily. The course cost is £350 (TBC) and can be booked here.

Hospitality and Cookery

Shetland UHI offer a SVQ Professional Cookery, at SCQF 5 and 6. If you want to learn professional cookery skills in high spec training kitchen, Shetland UHI should be your first stop.

Merchant Navy Deck Cadet

Starting on the 10th January, Shetland UHI are offering our January Deck Cadet Programme. As a cadet you will spend part of your time studying with us and part working at sea as a trainee on board ships. You will be employed by a shipping company which will pay you a training allowance (and pay all your fees and expenses) throughout your training.

CPD Aquaculture Management

This course is aimed at experienced aquaculture staff who are working in or ready to progress to aquaculture management roles or at anyone with a professional interest in the aquaculture industry. The course is applicable to a wide range of different types of aquaculture and aquaculture species in many parts of the world. This exciting course is fully online which means we are open to applications from around the world for this course.
