Opportunities for Video and Radio Experience

Are you interested in media, broadcasting or journalism? Shetland College is working in partnership with 60 North to offer exciting opportunities for students to get hands on production experience. It doesn’t matter what you are studying at the college – all are welcome who are keen and enthusiastic!

What is 60 North?

The 60 North video and radio platform was launched in Autumn 2016, to offer complimentary content to the established 60 North magazine. In line with Promote Shetland’s remit to encourage people to live, work, study and invest in the isles, content covers all aspects of island life: culture, history, industry, wildlife, and much more!

Opportunities for Students

Live Broadcast

60 North has organised live broadcast of local events for a number of years. You may have seen some of the 60 North video recorded at the Shetland Reel Music Festival 2015, The Heavy Metal Buffet, The Shetland Youth Volunteering Awards or the annual broadcast of the Up Helly Aa procession. There is also a weekly live radio show hosted by Tom Morton which is broadcast from Lerwick. It is always useful to have another set of hands at these events, whether that is for operating cameras, video mixing, setting up the network or winding up cables! If you’re interested in offering technical support to a professional broadcast then please get in touch!

Content

We are looking for students interested in producing video or radio content for the 60 North platform. We would be looking for content relating to the college (e.g. a day in the life of a student, a lecturer profile, a tour of a particular department, etc.) but you would also be encouraged to produce pieces relating to other parts of Shetland life which interest you. For example: community events, local bands, birdwatching, beach combing, etc. If your interests lie more in print, then there could be opportunities to provide regular written content for the 60 North magazine.

60 North is looking for a wide range of content, so there is plenty of opportunity to cover something which interests you!

Radio Presenting

If you fancy yourself as a radio presenter, there would be opportunities to co-host a weekly live broadcast with Tom Morton and/or Davie Gardner. This could involve interviewing guests, reviewing local bands, organising music playlists and much more! If there is sufficient interest from college students we could even look at developing a regular college radio slot which is fully delivered by students. If you are particularly passionate about radio there could even be an opportunity for you to host your own radio show!
