Application of Maths SCQF Level 5
What is special about this course?
National 5 Applications of Mathematics is a course designed to extend numerical mathematical skills across a range of real-life applications.
The course explores the applications of mathematical techniques and skills in everyday situations, including financial matters, statistics, and measurement.
The course places less emphasis on mathematical theory than National 5 Mathematics, and instead focuses on problem solving, risk assessment, and making informed decisions based on mathematical reasoning and the results of computations.
Entry requirements
Candidates require a pass at one of the following: National 4 Mathematics, National 4 Applications of Mathematics, Standard Grade Mathematics at level 4 or above, or equivalent
The following provides a broad overview of the subject skills, knowledge and understanding developed in the course:
• analyse real-life situations and problems involving mathematics.
• identify valid mathematical operational skills to tackle real-life situations or problems.
• select and apply numeracy skills.
• select and apply skills in finance, statistics, measurement, geometry, graphical data and probability.
• use mathematical reasoning skills to draw conclusions or justify decisions.
• communicate mathematical information in an appropriate way.
Equipment
Students will be required to purchase the course text- National 5 Applications of Mathematics published by TeeJay.
How will I study my course?
- Part Time
Teacher led learning sessions and in-class practice sessions. Students will be required to undertake self-study to complete the course.
How long will my course last?
9 MonthsHow will I be assessed?
The course assessment is an SQA external exam made up of two papers sat at the end of the course. The date and time of this exam is set by SQA.

What can I do on completion of my course?
Academic: National 5 Applications of Mathematics is a common entry requirement for many college and university courses.
Employment/Career: This course will provide proof of your maths skills to a prospective employer.
It should be noted, however, that if you wish to progress to Higher, National 5 Mathematics rather than Applications of Mathematics is required.
