Engineering (SCQF Level 5) Academy Programme

What is special about this course?

This 1 year programme allows students to attend college on a part-time basis during 5th or 6th year at school. Participants will work towards a National Certificate (NC) in Engineering Systems - an entry-level course at SCQF Level 5 that provides a broad-based introduction to general engineering subjects, with a particular emphasis on practical skills and knowledge. Students may also have the chance to gain paid work experience with a local engineering company.

Entry requirements

Students should be about to start your 5th or 6th year at school and be studying (and expect to achieve) English and Maths at National 4 or above. Studying Physics or Engineering Science would also be an advantage.

Students will work towards a National Certificate (NC) in Engineering Systems, which will include the following topics:

  • Engineering Mathematics
  • Engineering IT
  • Engineering Materials
  • Mechanical Engineering Principles
  • Electrical Principles
  • Electrical Wiring Skills
  • Engineering Systems: Principles, application, test and measurement
  • Health and Safety - Engineering & Maintenance
  • Plant Maintenance Practice

Students may also have the opportunity to gain work experience through a placement with a local engineering company.

Equipment

You may be required to provide a boiler suit and safety boots for use in the workshops

How will I study my course?

  • Part Time

Theory based units will be delivered in a classroom environment. If restrictions do not allow for this, these elements will be delivered in live online lectures.

Practical elements will be delivered in the workshops at the Scalloway campus. 
 

How long will my course last?

1 Year

1 year part time. You will attend college at the Shetland UHI Scalloway campus on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons during term time (from 1.30 to 4.30). You will also have 2 periods per week at school with an engineering lecturer.

How will I be assessed?

    Students are assessed on each unit by a combination of written assessments, assignments and observation of practical tasks where appropriate.

There are no fees for this course and transport between school and college will be provided

  • Modern Apprenticeship in Engineering (could be exempt from 1st year if successfully complete this course)
  • Merchant Navy Officer Engineering Cadetship
  • A job in an engineering or related field.
