What is special about this course?

The Foundation Apprenticeship in Business Skills aims to provide Senior Year (S6) pupils with the opportunity to develop skills and knowledge for entry into a career in the Business/Administration sector.

As a trained business administrator or budding manager, you will have gained a highly transferable set of knowledge and skills that can be applied in all sectors. This includes small and large businesses in the private sector, the public sector, and the charitable sector. Whatever role you take on in the future, it is likely that it will involve developing, maintaining and improving administrative services; this programme is designed to equip you for the future.

On completion of the Foundation Apprenticeship in Business Skills, you will have achieved a large proportion of the requirements for a Modern Apprenticeship in Business Administration Level 3, and you will have the potential to be able to achieve fast tracked progression if you gain employment in this type of a role.

Entry requirements

Essential:

National 5 English or working towards this level

National 4 Maths (Life Skills Maths acceptable)

Working knowledge of Microsoft Office packages (Word processing, Spreadsheets, Databases and PowerPoint)

Higher Business Management

The Foundation Apprenticeship will feature a National Progression Award (NPA) in Business with IT. This consists of the following units:

  • Understanding Business (part of Business Management Higher)
  • Management of People and Finance (part of Business Management Higher)
  • PC Passport: Working with IT Software – Word processing and presenting information
  • IT in Business: Spreadsheet, Database and Word Processing
  • Contemporary Business Issues

 

  • Work placement

Each week you will spend half a day with an employer, completing four units from the SVQ 3 Business and Administration award.

The units are:

  • Plan how to manage and improve your own performance in a business environment
  • Communicate in a business environment
  • Support other people to work in a business environment
  • Design and produce documents

 

How will I study my course?

  • Part Time

  • Block release

Theory based units will be delivered by a combination of face-to-face teaching, online delivery and work placement.

How long will my course last?

1 Year

You will attend college as agreed with your school, alongside pupils from other schools in Shetland.

You will spend time with a local employer. The type of employer will be determined according to your area of interest, and what is locally available to you.

How will I be assessed?

    Assessment is ongoing throughout the year, a combination of open and closed book assessments, with observations and discussions for the SVQ elements.

What can I do on completion of my course?

The Foundation Apprenticeship in Business Skills will also give you a good insight into business and other business-related subjects which you could pursue either through a Modern Apprenticeship or academic/vocational studies in:

  • Business and Administration
  • Digital Marketing
  • Procurement
  • Supply Chain Management        
  • Enterprise
  • Marketing

Progression routes to further study:

  • HNC Business, HNC Accounting,
    or
    HNC Administration and Information Technology
  • Modern Apprenticeship – SVQ Business and Administration

The following require additional qualifications along with the Foundation Apprenticeship in Business Skills (such as an HNC):

  • HND in Business or HND Administration & Information Technology
  • BA (Hons) in Business & Management
