Criminology (SCQF Level 5) NPA
What is special about this course?
It is easy to see that the study of Criminology has increased with the growing fascination we have for trying to understand criminal activity. Even in popular culture crime shows have evolved from car chases and shoot up to the forensic analysis of solving crime. Are you inspired by Criminal Minds, CSI or The Making of a Murderer? Criminology might just be the direction for you!
Entry requirements
Preferably two National 4 qualifications in related discipline e.g. Modern Studies, English; History.
Prospective students without the standard entry requirements would be encouraged to apply and will be considered on an individual basis.
You will be invited to an interview.
The following subjects are covered:
- Criminology: Crime in the Community
- The History and Development of Criminology
- Criminology: Crime Scenes
Crime in the Community: Understanding the crime around us, the way the media present it and what is happening to stop it?
The History and Development of Criminology: Understanding why we learn about crime and criminality.
Crime Scenes: Students will evaluate how to process the scene of a crime, collating not only the physical evidence, but the psychological evidence too. Who committed this crime? It’s all there, in front of you
How will I study my course?
- Day release
You will study through short lectures, group discussions, reflection on practice and individual study. Some of this will be delivered face-to-face and some units will be delivered online via virtual classroom.
How long will my course last?
1 YearDay release = 1 academic year
College ½ day per week from end of August to end of June
How will I be assessed?
There are a variety of assessment methods used within this qualification. There will be written assessments, short tests, presentations and discussion.

Further study in related social sciences, PDA Criminology L6, NC Social Sciences and onwards to a Criminology degree.
