Criminology (SCQF Level 6) NPA
What is special about this course?
This National Progression Award (NPA) allows learners to study criminology, including the complex nature of crime and the problems of measuring crime.
It develops an understanding of the criminal justice system and provides bite-sized chunks of learning that are straightforward for centres to adopt and for learners to study. The award focuses on areas such as the nature and extent of crime, and forensic psychology.
Criminology is the scientific study of crime, including its causes, responses by the criminal justice system, and methods of prevention. In both the mandatory and optional units, you will study the nature and extent of crime, crime in the community, forensic science and crime control strategies.
Entry requirements
3 relevant qualifications at SCQF level 5 or equivalent e.g history, english, modern studies etc
Alternative entry requirements will be considered

- Criminology: Crime Control Strategies
- Criminology: Forensic Psychology
How will I study my course?
- Day release
You will study through short lectures, group discussions, reflection on practice and individual study. Some of this will be delivered face-to-face and some units will be delivered online via virtual classroom.
You will have placement for 2 days per week during the duration of the course – you will be expected to fit in with the working timings of the setting.
How long will my course last?
1 YearDay release = 1 academic year
College ½ day per week from the end of August to the end of June.
How will I be assessed?
There are a variety of assessment methods used within this qualification. There will be written assessments, short tests, presentations and discussion.
