Stuart Smith and Krystian Lis were rewarded for the high quality of their engineering projects.

They came up with their own ideas independently and produced designs before machining all the component parts and constructing their final working models.

Stuart, who works for marine engineering firm HNP, designed and built a hydraulic hay bale handler for mounting on the front of a tractor while Lerwick Fish Traders Ltd employee Krystian produced an electro-mechanical motor.

Engineering Lecturer Howie Thomson said: “Stuart and Krystian devised their own projects and worked on them with only light supervision from staff.

“The quality of their final products is outstanding and worthy of recognition. They have set high standards for themselves which staff hope they can build on as they develop their careers.”

The engineers received their certificates from David Sandison, Chairman of the Shetland Fisheries Training Centre Trust which operates the Scalloway-based NAFC Marine Centre, at a recent meeting of trustees.

Mr Sandison said: “Trustees were very interested to see the work of the two Modern Apprenticeship engineers and it was a pleasure to present them with certificates in recognition of the excellence of their work.

“The NAFC Marine Centre is a fantastic launch pad for young folk seeking marine-related careers from engineering to aquaculture, from fishing to science.”
