Sea Rituals to be Explored in Free Seminar

Dr Arne Kruse, Senior Lecturer in Norwegian at The University of Edinburgh, will be visiting Shetland this week to deliver a seminar entitled Risk and Ritual: Magic Thinking at Sea.

Dr Arne Kruse, The University of Edinburgh.

The event, which is the first in a series of free public seminars from the Centre for Nordic Studies UHI, will be exploring superstition and taboo language used by the fishermen of the North Sea to ensure a safe voyage and bountiful catch.

Dr Kruse has roots in Veiholmen, a small Norwegian fishing community, and he will bring his experience of deep sea fishing to the seminar discussions. He has published extensively on the topic of Norse place-names in Shetland, Scotland and Norway; which has encouraged a particular interest in the history and culture of the islands. The talk will be delivered at the NAFC Marine Centre UHI on Friday 10th March at 7.30pm - all are welcome.
