Coastal Archaeology Workshop

The NAFC Marine Centre UHI is holding a skills workshop for anyone interested in getting involved in a project to record Shetland's coastal archaeology.

The workshop is part of NAFC's Shetland Rural Islands Maritime Heritage Asset Atlas Project which is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. Project coordinator, Chalotte Slater, explained that, "This workshop is aimed at anyone who is out and about on Shetland's coast and is interested in how to go about recording any archaeological finds that they might come across. The workshop is free and open to anyone who is interested, you don't need to have any previous knowledge or experience of archaeology."

The workshop will be in two halves. The morning will include several talks, including:

• an overview project by Charlotte Slater (NAFC)
• an introduction to Shetland's coastal archaeology by Val Turner (Shetland Amenity Trust)
• the work of the SCAPE Trust and 'citizen archaeology' by Jo Hambly (SCAPE Trust)
• improving your camera skills by Austin Taylor (phorographer).

In the afternoon workshop participants will visit the Sands of Sound with archaeologists to look at some archaeological sites.

The workshop will run from 9.30 to 1.00 on Saturday 24th February in the Islesburgh Community Centre in Lerwick, and from 2.00 at the Sands of Sound.

The workshop is free to attend but booking is essential.
