Recruitment of Non-Executive Board Members

Individuals with a real passion for education in Shetland are being asked to apply to become non-executive members of the shadow board for the new merged college in Shetland.

The new merged College will continue to deliver the first class education, research and training on offer from NAFC Marine Centre UHI, Shetland College UHI and Train Shetland. It will be the most northern partner of the University of the Highlands and Islands, who offer a diverse range of courses, many taking advantage of our region's unique environment, landscape and culture.

The new college wants to provide a high quality experience for students and learners and ensure the student voice is central to decision making at all levels.  They also hope to further the curriculum available and Board Members will be part of shaping those developments.  They intend to engage positively with employers, multi-agency partners and wider stakeholders so that learning delivery is aligned to student, business and community needs whilst forming partnerships that contribute to economic development within the Shetland Community, and beyond.

The role of Board Member is pivotal in developing the strategic aims and in ensuring sound stewardship and best practice for the new merged college.

Max Brown, a representative from the University of the Highlands and Islands, who is supporting the formation of the shadow board, said “This is an exciting opportunity to be part of the board during a period of change for the future of further and higher education in the region.”  He added, “We would particularly welcome applications from groups currently under-represented on Shetland’s public bodies, such as women, young people, people with a disability or people from an ethnic minority.”

The voluntary role will require successful candidates to dedicate around 2 days per month, however, in the months leading up to the merger, Board members can expect higher levels of engagement and therefore time commitment.  The deadline for submitting applications is 10th May 2019.
