Successful Maritime Safety Day Held at UHI Shetland
More than 40 people attended Maritime Safety Day 2026 at UHI Shetland’s Scalloway Campus on Saturday 16 May, taking part in a full day of practical demonstrations, emergency response training and maritime safety activities.
Held in association with Water Safety Day 2026, the event brought together experienced maritime staff, local organisations and members of the public to promote lifesaving skills and safe practice at sea.
Throughout the day, visitors participated in a range of drop-in sessions including CPR and first aid at sea, VHF emergency procedures and Mayday call training, liferaft and jackstay demonstrations, and interactive experiences using the college’s maritime bridge simulator.
A series of small-group Intro to Powerboat Handling sessions also proved popular, giving participants the opportunity to learn basic boat handling techniques, carry out safety checks, use onboard navigation systems and practise man overboard rescue exercises.
Funds raised through the powerboat sessions and an RNLI fundraising raffle will support the charity’s ongoing lifesaving work.
The event was delivered with funding support from Trinity House, whose contribution helped make the community safety initiative possible.
Speaking after the event, UHI Shetland staff said they were delighted with the turnout and engagement shown throughout the day.
“The response to Maritime Safety Day was extremely positive, with over 40 people attending across the event. It was fantastic to see so many people taking an active interest in maritime safety, developing practical skills and engaging with the training opportunities available. Events like this play an important role in helping build confidence and awareness for anyone spending time on or around the water.”
Staff were also available throughout the event to provide information on maritime training courses and career pathways available through UHI Shetland.
