UHI Shetland Pays Tribute to Leslie Tait MBE

UHI Shetland is saddened to learn of the passing of Leslie Tait MBE, a respected fisherman, educator and mentor whose contribution to maritime training helped shape generations of seafarers across Shetland.

Leslie joined the NAFC Marine Centre in 2002 as a lecturer in navigation and seamanship, bringing with him decades of experience gained at sea. His extensive practical knowledge, combined with a patient and approachable teaching style, made him an invaluable member of staff and a highly respected figure among students and colleagues alike.

Throughout his 15 years at the NAFC Marine Centre, now UHI Shetland, Leslie taught a wide range of nautical and fisheries subjects, from classroom-based theory to practical boat handling and navigation at sea. He also contributed to fisheries research projects, operated the centre’s research and survey vessels, and played an important role in maintaining strong links between the institution and the fishing industry.
When he retired from teaching in 2017, after 15 years of service, Leslie spoke of the satisfaction he had gained from passing on his knowledge and experience to new generations of fishermen. His commitment to developing the skills, confidence and professionalism of those entering the industry remained evident throughout his career.
While Leslie was widely recognised for his leadership within the fishing industry and was awarded an MBE in 2016 for services to fishing, his educational legacy is equally significant. Many of the fishermen, skippers and maritime professionals working in Shetland and beyond today benefited directly from his guidance, encouragement and expertise during their training.

His influence extended far beyond the classroom. Former students frequently spoke of the practical advice, support and mentorship he provided as they established their careers at sea. The generations of fishermen he helped train stand as a lasting testament to his dedication to both the industry and the community he served.

Everyone at UHI Shetland extends their sincere condolences to Leslie’s family, friends and former colleagues.

Leslie will be remembered not only for his remarkable contribution to Shetland’s fishing industry, but for the lasting impact he made on the lives and careers of the many students who had the privilege of learning from him.
