About the role
You will be employed as an Apprentice Mechanic within a working garage environment, supporting the inspection, maintenance and repair of Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs), vans and plant equipment. The role combines hands-on practical work with structured training and assessment.
What you’ll be doing day-to-day
- Assisting senior mechanics with servicing, inspections and repairs
- Diagnosing faults across mechanical and electrical systems
- Replacing damaged or worn components
- Carrying out routine servicing and safety checks
- Road testing vehicles to confirm repairs
- Using tools, equipment and diagnostic systems safely
- Maintaining a clean and safe workshop environment
Training and qualifications
This role is a Modern Apprenticeship in Heavy Vehicle Maintenance and Repair, delivered in partnership with UHI Shetland.
- SVQ Level 3 in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair (Heavy) – SCQF Level 7
- Level 2 and Level 3 Diplomas in Heavy Vehicle Maintenance and Repair
- IMI accredited qualification
- 4-year apprenticeship programme
- Block release training at Moray Firth Training Group, Inverness
- Workplace assessment and evidence building throughout the programme
