Merchant Navy Officer Cadet Programme

The Merchant Navy Officer Cadet Programme trains deck (navigation) and engineer officers for the merchant navy. As a cadet you will spend part of your time studying with us and part working at sea as a trainee on board ships. You will be employed by a shipping company which will pay you a training allowance (and pay all your fees and expenses) throughout your training.

The professional and academic qualifications that you gain as a cadet will enable you to work as a junior deck or engineer officer on ships anywhere in the world or progress to further study.

Cadet Access Course

We are running a 12-week Cadet Access Course, starting on the 2nd May 2022, which is aimed at those potential cadets who do not have the minimum entry requirements for the cadedship. These are a minimum of four National 5s (or GCSE or Standart Grade passes at Grade C/3 or above) including English, Mathematics and a Science based subject.

It is structured to develop the student's communication and mathematical skills while they are introduced to the various aspects of a seafarer's work. Topics such as vessel construction and stability will be studied along with ropework, navigational watchkeeping, basic vessel engineering systems along with a few others and successful candidates will be awarded a NPA in Maritime Studies at SCQF level 5.

You can apply for the Cadet Access Course here.

If you have any questions about the course, please contact us at cadets.shetland@uhi.ac.uk

When I was 12 years old I wrote a
school report about the Panama Canal.

As an Engineer Officer Cadet I got
to sail through it for real.

Here is a film I made of my incredible experience:
