Vision 17 Student Exhibitions

The corridors of Shetland College UHI have been buzzing over the last few weeks as staff and students prepare for ‘Vision 17’ - the annual exhibition of student art and design work. Walls have been freshly painted, artwork in every form imaginable has been displayed throughout the building and the hospitality department has even taken the time to organise a pop up café. The end of year exhibitions are always a vibrant showcase of student work, and this year looks to be no exception.

Jane Ridland, first year student of BA (Hons) Fine Art

Faye Hackers, Programme Leader of the University of the Highlands and Islands’ BA (Hons) Contemporary Textiles, is particularly enthusiastic about the textile work produced by the students this year. As well as a ‘truly sensational’ Degree Show showcasing final year students Nicole Taylor and Kirsty Nicolson, a selection of coursework from all four years of the degree programme will be on display. Ms Hackers described the collection as ‘an amazing display of design work, ranging from fashion photography and garment design, to life drawing and tactile Social Practice projects.’ Visitors can take away a graduate catalogue this year, which has been produced with support from Promote Shetland. This years’ exhibition is especially exciting with the addition of first year BA (Hons) Fine Art students to the department, who will be displaying prints, paintings, photos, sculptures and drawings.

NC Art and Design has had a particularly large class of fifteen students this year (including full-time and part-time), with students ranging from school leavers to retirees. Lecturer, Paul Bloomer, described their work as a ‘diverse mix of artistic media, underpinned by strong drawing skills, where each students’ individual personality and identity is allowed to shine through.’ S3 and S4 school pupils who attend the college to study Vocational Pathways: Contemporary Art Skills are also providing a selection of their work from the year. Some of these students will probably continue to the NC course, so we can expect more creative work from them in future exhibitions.

Regular visitors to the end of year exhibitions know to expect varied and creative artwork from the students who visit the college from Eric Gray Services. This year the Forward Directions students have been working on a diverse range of personal projects, while Lifeskills students are exhibiting artwork in three areas – ‘working with Textiles,’ ‘Creative Media’ and ‘Creative Projects.’ Their work includes everything from furniture design to stop-motion animation.

All are welcome at the opening night of Vision 17 on Friday 9th June from 6.30pm. The exhibition will be open to the public for two weeks from Monday 12th June – 9.00am to 5.00pm on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays; and 9.00am to 7.45pm on Mondays and Wednesdays. The pop up café will be open from 3pm daily.
