Our research on seabed habitats utilises a variety of tools and expertise including bathymetric surveys, drop-down video assessments and drone surveys, to inform marine management in collaboration with local stakeholders. More recently, we have expanded our research to investigate the potential for marine restoration and enhancement and the role of blue carbon within Shetland’s waters. Our work explores the diversity and function of benthic ecosystems, bridging the gap between ecological research and practical marine governance.

Alongside habitat mapping, our team engages in applied research to support marine policy and conservation. This includes ecosystem-based marine spatial planning that balances ecological sustainability with the needs of the local community and marine industries. By combining scientific expertise with practical application, we aim to enhance the resilience of Shetland’s marine ecosystems for future generations.
