Skills for Work Maritime Skills is relevant to anyone considering a career in the maritime industries, including fishing. The course provides basic knowledge and a range of practical skills relevant to maritime industries as well as raising awareness of the range of employment opportunities available in the maritime sector.

When you complete the you will be awarded a Skills for Work - Maritime Skills award which is SQA accredited at SCQF Level 5.

Course Summary

In Skills for Work Maritime Skills you will learn about, and gain practical skills in, a variety of topics relevant to maritime careers, including:

An Introduction to Seamanship

  • Basic boat-handling skills and develops awareness of safety requirements.
  • Anchoring, mooring and securing a boat and the use of ropes, wires and chains.

Health & Safety in the Maritime Sector

  • Risk assessments and boat evacuation.
  • Basic firefighting & first aid.

The Maritime Environment

  • Weather and its effects on maritime activities.
  • Basic navigation & chartwork.

Small Boat Engineering

  • Basic engineering of small boats.
  • Propulsion and steering methods and types of engines.
  • Routine care and maintenance of an engine and auxiliaries.

Employability Skills and Careers in the Maritime Sector

  • The range of maritime industries, services and career opportunities available.
