Shaetlan Language Plan

In 2022 the board of UHI Shetland adopted the UHI Shaetlan Language plan, highlighting our commitment to the language of our isles, supported by the UHI Islands Strategy.  The language plan sets out some key areas where UHI Shetland aims to support our language in our own operations and more widely in collaboration with partners including statutory agencies, community groups, government and researchers.  The key objectives are:

  • Raising the profile of Shaetlan locally, nationally, and internationally
  • Promoting the use of Shaetlan, including in education settings
  • Increasing research activity with respect to the understanding, use and future position of Shaetlan as a vernacular language
