The Shetland Islands are remote, located closer to Bergen in Norway than to Aberdeen on mainland Scotland. This geographical remoteness has fostered a deep connection between the islanders and their natural surroundings. The sea is evident in every part of Shetland life, from the climate to the main industries, to the most popular recreational pursuits.
We undertake research to better understand how local communities value and use the marine environment but also how effectively these values and uses are being integrated into marine decision-making.
